The ISCR has a proactive policy of partnership with the socio-economic network, as highlighted over the past 5 years by the 330 agreements (research or service contracts) with companies, from start-ups to large international groups and SMEs. ISCR PhD students have benefited from about thirty CIFRE or industrial scholarships. The 140 invention declarations and 40 filed patents are related directly to the major societal challenges: Health and life sciences (molecules for therapeutic purposes, biomaterials), Energy (production, conversion, storage), Environment (catalysis, green chemistry, air/water treatment), Materials (particularly with optical functions, or from renewable sources). They constitute a decisive entry into the socio-economic world either through licensing (12 over the period 2015-2019), in the areas of catalysis, biomaterials, luminescent markers, and biosourced polymers, or by the creation of companies. ISCR has created 6 start-ups, 2 common laboratories & 2 business units since 2010.
ISCR has received several awards (such as the Concours Mondial de l'Innovation) in recognition of its achievements in the area of development and innovation, particularly in relation with the creation of these start-ups.
ISCR strengthens its international activities through its academic / industrial partnerships within a joint laboratory and an international joint unit.
International Mixed Unit
The International Mixed Unit CNRS-St-Gobain – UMI 3629 «LINK » (Laboratory for Innovative Key materials and Structures), established in 2014 has as « site miroir » the “Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes” (in partnership with the University of Rennes 1 and the CNRS). The UMI LINK is hosted by the National Institute of Material Sciences (NIMS) in Tsukuba, Japan.
This new international research unit is the 1st international chemistry laboratory created in Japan representing an innovative academic and industrial collaboration model among highly talented international researchers. Research activities at LINK include the creation and synthesis of novel materials, the innovative refining processes and the fine characterization of physical and chemical properties.

GreenCARE : A “common laboratory” for green chemistry. The aim is to develop more efficient, more environmentally friendly, less toxic and generally more economical chemical processes (2018-2023)
ChemInTag : ChemInTag INSA Rennes / CNRS / Olnica common Laboratory whose ambition is to create a pole, visible nationally, in the field of luminescent anti-counterfeiting markers (2019 - )

CIFRE Thesis - A public/private partnership
CIFRE thesis is a specific PhD developed through a partnership involving a public institute and a private company supported by the ANRT.
ISCR was hosting around thirty CIFRE PhDs in the past five years which represent 10-15% of the total number of theses at ISCR over the period 2015-2019.
Technology transfer
The SATT Ouest Valorisation is the privileged representative of public research developed at ISCR to the industrial sector. It supports researchers in the valorization of their results with companies.
FUI - Innovation centers
The innovation and development of ISCR’s collaborative research and development projects are supported by innovation centers such as Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique, Alsace BioValley, Valorial & Cosmetic Valley.
