Abstract:

The coupling of two polymethine subunits within six-membered quinoidal rings is an efficient approach to design unconventional dyes featuring optical properties pushed towards the red and near-infrared regions. Our continuous efforts to explore such systems led to the isolation of cationic and (poly)zwitterionic species built around monocyclic, polyclic and macrocyclic coupled polymethines, contributing to a greater understanding of the structure-properties relationships in these exotic dyes.
