Yann Trolez obtained his PhD degree from the University of Strasbourg in 2010. His thesis was supervised by Jean-Paul Collin and Jean-Pierre Sauvage. It dealt with the synthesis and study of cyclic and linear multi-rotaxanes. After a postdoctoral stay at ETH Zürich in the group of François Diederich working in the field of allenic and acetylenic chemistry, he was appointed assistant professor in 2011 at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Rennes to work with Jean-Claude Guillemin. In 2015, he spent one year supported by the CNRS in the group of Philippe Gros working on the synthesis of iron(II) complexes for photovoltaics. In 2019, he passed his habilitation (HDR) to become associate professor. He co-authored 44 publications.

Research interests

The group is focused on the synthesis, the reactivity and the properties of molecular and supramolecular organic systems. Three different fields are currently developed.

1) Synthesis and chemistry of conjugated diynes and triynes

We are interested in cyanopolyynes (H-(C≡C)n-CN), which were detected in the interstellar medium for n = 1 to 4, and derivatives. We published new syntheses of cyanobutadiyne (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2005) and methylcyanobutadiyne (Chem. Eur. J. 2013, J. Org. Chem. 2016). We also perform photolyses experiments in the gas phase in order to understand how these molecules could be formed in the interstellar medium, and experiments in the condensed phase to examine their reactivity. Synthetic methodology is thus a key aspect of our research to access the target compounds. Unprecedented reactivity is also investigated (Chem. Eur. J. 2015). Recently, we have been able to synthesize conjugated triynes by alkyne metathesis (Chem. Sci. 2020, Organometallics 2021).

2) Synthesis and study of new 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobutadienes

We recently showed that a certain number of ynamides reacted very well with tetracyanoethylene to give 1,1,4,4-tetracyanobutadienes (TCBDs) in high yields, following a sequence of [2+2]cycloaddition-[2+2]retroelectrocyclization (Chem. Eur. J. 2014; Chem. Asian J. 2017). We are currently taking advantage of the exceptional electron-withdrawing abilities of the TCBD group to tune the optoelectronic properties of some π-extended compounds (Chem. Eur. J. 2018, Chem. Commun. 2020Org. Lett. 2021, Chem. Eur. J. 2022, Tetrahedron Chem 2023).

3) Synthesis and study of boron-templated assemblies
